UnionPay
Mobile payment app and design system for digital brand experience.

In a highly competitive payments market, how might we combine UnionPay's existing strengths with user insights to create a spending experience people love?

UnionPay's extensive merchant network creates a unique advantage: location-based coupons tailored to personal preferences can increase usage frequency and customer loyalty.

Designed a new version of UnionPay's mobile payment app and brand/digital design system. The work focused on enhancing user experience through new features, interaction models, visual direction, and emotional engagement, with QR code payment, personalized coupons, and daily service as core experience improvements.
Challenge
A payment platform needed clearer interaction, stronger product utility, and more compelling daily engagement. The challenge was to make a functional fintech app feel simple, trusted, personalized, and repeatable without adding unnecessary complexity, while ultimately building a differentiated brand image, visual and interaction language, and user experience that stood apart from competing payment apps.
Solution
Directed a payment-first mobile UX and design system, prioritizing QR code payment as the default entry point while building personalization, coupon, spending-awareness, and daily-service modules around it. The output was not only screen design, but a clearer product hierarchy and visual language that made a functional fintech app feel faster, more trusted, and more repeatable.
Impact
Delivered a refreshed mobile app concept and design system that strengthened UnionPay's differentiated brand image, visual and interaction language, personalization, and high-frequency payment usability. By systematizing reusable patterns and product rules, the work improved brand recognition, cross-feature consistency, and development efficiency, giving teams a scalable foundation for faster fintech iteration in China's rapidly evolving mobile payment market.
